Earlier this fall, the Honourable Paula Simons, Senator, linked up with Ms. Jensdottir’s class at Lakedell School to read aloud some of her favourite stories while also answering student questions about being a part of Canada’s federal government and her previous career as a journalist and columnist.
The Grade 5 and 6 students expressed appreciation for this interaction and eagerly engaged with Senator Simons throughout the 45-minute Google Classroom connection. The virtual engagement is an example of the board's mission "to create a culture of continuous learning where students are safe to cultivate individual potential".
A study of Canada’s government systems is a required element of the Grade 6 Social Studies program. This was a terrific opportunity for our students to communicate with a person at such a high level within Canada’s government, and to understand that those who serve in government can be relatively ordinary citizens.
