On May 13, 2017, Tyler Dziwenko and Jessica Haenni, were part of the Central Alberta Caring for our Watersheds Final Competition. Over 250 students entered the 2017 competition from across central and northern Alberta. Tyler and Jessica were one of the ten finalist groups sharing their project ideas on improving their watershed.
Tyler and Jessica won 5th place and $600 for themselves and their school - Pigeon Lake Regional School!
Tyler Dziwenko and Jessica Haenni entered the contest with a project idea to distribute rain barrels throughout their community. These two students from Pigeon Lake Regional School are strong advocates for conserving water, and have committed themselves fully to enacting their proposal idea in their school as well as their community.
The Caring for our Watersheds program asks students in Grades 7-12 “What can you do to improve your watershed?”
- Students develop a 1000 word proposal describing their project idea.
- 10 Finalist groups present a 5 minute verbal presentation at the Final Competition.
- All finalists receive a cash prize, as well as matching prize amount for their school.
- Funding is also available for students who would like to implement their idea.
- The program is a great fit for project-based learning in both junior and senior high classes, and fits well in both science and social science curriculum.
