Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools is pleased to announce that, Sara Pickering a Lakedell Elementary School teacher has been selected as WRPS’s 2014 Edwin Parr Teacher Award Nominee. The Edwin Parr Teacher Award recognizes first year teachers that demonstrate exemplary dedication and commitment in the field of Education.

“I am excited to be nominated for the Edwin Parr Award” says Sara. “I would like to thank the people who have supported me like my mentor teachers, the Learning Support Teacher, my Principal and the Lakedell School Community”

Sara’s teaching assignment includes grade one language arts, math, science, health and art, as well as grade three math.

“Sara is organized, engaging, kind and caring, but what is most impressive about Sara, is her willingness to grow and her eagerness to try new things.  She is not afraid of feedback and she has sought out the advice of the experienced teachers on our staff, in particular our Learning Support Teacher.” says Trevor Van Someren, Lakedell School Principal.  “Students are truly engaged and excited to learn in her classroom, they continue talking about learning even after class is over.”

When asked what she likes best about teaching she replied, “Seeing the growth and excitement in students when they learn a new skill; puts a smile on my face and it is very rewarding.”

Sara attained a Science Diploma from N.A.I.T. before earning a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta.  Sara became a teacher because she enjoys working with children and credits her dance background with inspiring her to want to teach children as a career.  “I strive to be a positive influence for my students, and being able to positively impact their learning is critical to their success in school.”

Each year, the Alberta School Board Association (ASBA) honors outstanding first-year teachers representing six zones throughout the province. Sara will be recognized at the Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools Board Recognition night on May 9, 2014 and at the ASBA Zone 4 awards banquet held in Lacombe on May 26, 2014.

“On behalf of Wetaskiwin Regional Public School Division, we congratulate Sara as the 2014 Edwin Parr Teacher Award nominee for the division” says Deanna Specht, Board Chair. "We are proud of the dedication and service Sara has demonstrated in her first year of teaching. She keeps students engaged, while at the same time striving to improve her teaching strategies. Her passion for education is evident and we wish her the very best in the years to come."
