Pigeon Lake Regional School desires to bridge the cultural and academic gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. The inclusion of relevant cultural, spiritual and traditional knowledge and practices in schools can positively impact student success. Smudging is a relevant Indigenous practice.
To celebrate the opening of the new smudging room at Pigeon Lake Regional School, Elder Lorraine White was invited to bless the room and lead students, parents, and staff in a pipe ceremony.
Approximately 25 students who regularly smudge, along WRPS staff, were on hand to take part in this occasion. Following the ceremony, Pigeon Lake Indigenous student group served bannock for all who participated, and Grade 11 student Isaiah Deschamps shared his drumming and singing for the group.
Elder Lorraine reflected that this is "a very good step towards reconciliation".
