Parkdale School Receives Indigo Love of Reading $50,000.00 Grant

On May 23, 2018 representatives from the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation attended an assembly at the Parkdale School to announce the exciting news that Parkdale School was awarded an Indigo Love of Reading Foundation grant of $50,000.00.

The Foundation is dedicated to putting books in the hands of Canadian children and provides grants to high need schools who demonstrate an incredible dedication to literacy.

The Parkdale School student population consists of approximately 68% Indigenous students and many of the students who attend Parkdale School live in Maskwacis. Currently the Parkdale School library has an annual budget of $800.00 per year which works out to approximately $3.00 per student. The library is in desperate need of new resources as the average age of the books in the Parkdale School Library is twelve years old.   This grant will be used to fill the library with new books and replenish classroom libraries.  In addition the grant will allow the school to purchase cultural literature so the students can see themselves reflected in the books they read.  A parent section will also be added to the school library to help create a culture of literacy both at school and at home.

Sandra Wilson, Principal stated: “This grant will make a huge difference in our building the students and staff are very excited to have the opportunity to purchase both current and relevant books for our school.”

Indigo representatives also brought enough books to the assembly on May 23, 2018 so each student in the school was allowed to choose a book to take back to their classroom library.  In addition, the Indigo representatives brought their favorite book to be added to the school library collection.

Thank you to the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation for choosing Parkdale School as a 2018 recipient of this grant.  The staff and students are beyond excited to use the grant funds to infuse the school with books and inspire their students to fall in love with reading!
