Norwood School Blesses Smudging Room

At Norwood, we believe the focus of school is to be a place of learning.  The inclusion of relevant cultural, spiritual and traditional knowledge and practices in schools can positively impact student success.  Smudging is a relevant Aboriginal practice.

To celebrate the opening of the new smudging room at Norwood School, Joey Deschamps was invited to bless the facility and lead students, parents, and staff in the inaugural smudge using this room.  Mr. Deschamps was joined by Cody Deschamps and Ray Marten.

Approximately 30 students who regularly smudge, along with multiple parents and WRPS staff, were on hand to take part in this occasion.  Following this event, Norwood’s Cree Leaders student group served tea for all who participated during a time of friendship.

This smudging room, the first of its kind in WRPS, is representative of the holistic approach embraced by the division to do what is best for all students.
