As at all WRPS schools, adults encourage students to develop individual and collective leadership skills. At Lakedell School students demonstrate these emerging talents in several ways.
Students at our school smudge to commence a new day. Each morning, a pair of older students lead the smudge, allowing students to begin their day in a positive, community-focused manner. The Grade 5 and 6 smudging leaders have been provided teachings by the school’s Maskwacis Wahkotowin Liaison, and the smudging leaders encourage participating students to reflect on purpose of smudging each day.
Select students also assist with morning announcements, updating the school community on the day’s events. Students develop their ability to speak clearly over the intercom, and gain confidence while extending their comfort zone in a safe, supported environment.
Before Christmas, the Grade 5/6 Class encouraged donations to the food bank as well as gift donations to the Pigeon Lake Santa’s Elves. Several boxes of food were collected, as were numerous toys and other gifts, helping area families have a good holiday season. Additionally, using funds collected through ice cream sales they organize, the students made a $300 cash donation to Santa’s Elves.
Finally, our older students demonstrate their leadership on a daily basis by serving as positive role models for the younger students. On our playground, you will see students of all ages playing together and it is not unusual to see younger siblings, cousins, and friends following the guidance provided by the more mature students.
By working together, the students of Lakedell School are developing their leadership skills and are helping their peers have great days at our school while contributing to their community.
