Board Meeting Highlights February 25, 2014

Wetaskiwin Composite High School Modernization On February 14, 2014 a 'kick-off' teleconference with Alberta Education and Alberta Infrastructure was held to discuss the scope and timelines related to the recently announced Wetaskiwin Composite High School Modernization. This project will be grant funded and Board directed. The scope of the project will include but is not limited to; upgrades to the 1965/1989 building sections, mechanical systems; electrical systems, CTS upgrades, CTS equipment, paving on the east side, sprinkler systems, security systems and instructional areas specifically designed based on the Inspiring Education document. The anticipated completion date for which the school would be open to the public is September 2016. The estimated budget for this project is not to exceed $12 million..

Modular Classrooms The Board has received confirmation from the Honourable Jeff Johnson, Minister of Education informing them that the allocation for six modular classrooms and one washroom unit for the Falun School has been approved.  The Board decided to write to the Minister and request an extension for one year to allow adequate time for the installation and set up of the modular classrooms. 

2014-2015 School Year Calendar Draft school year calendars were presented to the Board, at the February 11, 2014 Board Committees Meeting.  The Board has reviewed the calendars and has directed administration to add an additional three operational days for the purpose of staff collaboration and professional development.  The calendars will be brought back for approval at the March 25, 2014 Regular Board Meeting.  
 
Public Consultation – Falun School On February 27, 2014 an additional public consultation with the Falun School community was held to discuss the possible consolidation of the Lakedell and Pipestone Schools to Falun. 
 
Lakedell, Pipestone and Falun School Staff Consultation The Board decided to meet with the staff from the Lakedell, Falun and Pipestone Schools to discuss the possible consolidation of the three schools.  This consultation will take place on March 20, 2014 at 4:30 p.m. at the Falun School.
