Board Meeting Highlights December 17, 2013

Generative Governance and Inspiring Education The Board of Trustees discussed the “Inspiring Education: A Dialogue with Albertans” report and the "Inspiring Action on Eduction” report.  The Board decided that they would like to further these discussions with our System Administrative Team and will attend one of their future meetings to begin this conversation.

AP:130 School Year Revision to Instructional Hours The Board of Trustees discussed the Provincial Framework Agreement legislated by the Government of Alberta and the direction to reduce teacher instructional time to 907 hours. In order to make progress towards reducing teacher instructional hours to 907 hours per year Administrative Procedure 130 required revision.  Currently the Administrative Procedure mandates that all elementary and junior high schools account for 970 minimum hours of instruction, and that all ECS programs account for a minimum of 485 hours of instruction per year.  The Board made the decision to amend the administrative procedure to follow the recommendations of the Alberta Education Guide to Education ECS to Grade 12 which stipulates that elementary and junior high schools account for 950 minimum hours and ECS programs account for a minimum of 475 hours of instruction per year.

Strategic Facilities Plan – Pipestone & Lakedell School Closure

The Board decided to continue with the school closure process for Lakedell and Pipestone Schools but will move the final decision on closure to the May 27, 2014 Regular Board meeting.

Municipality Meetings

The Board will be arranging meetings with the three municipalities in the New Year.  Meetings will be scheduled with the County of Wetaskiwin, City of Wetaskiwin and Town of Millet.  This will be an opportunity to meet with the newly elected council members as well as discuss the impact the Strategic Facility Plan could have on each of the communities. Locally Developed Course: Forensic Science The Board authorized the acquisition of Locally Developed Courses Forensics 25 and 35, as developed by Edmonton Public School Board for use in Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools

Christmas Closure The Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools Central Office will be closed for Christmas from 4:30 p.m. on December 20, 2013 to 8:30 a.m. on January 2, 2014.
