Board Highlights February 24, 2015

PSBAA Request for Presenter at Spring Assembly
The Board received a request to present the Wahkotowin report at the Public School Board Associations Spring Assembly to be held May 29th – May 31st, 2015 in Red Deer.  The Board accepted the invitation from PSBAA and will be providing presenters for their sessions.

Edwin Parr Nominees
Each year, the Alberta School Board Association (ASBA) honors outstanding first-year teachers representing six zones throughout the province. Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools has received two nominations that will be put forward to the local selection committee.  The committee consisting of two Trustees will select one nominee to represent Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools at the 2015 Edwin Parr Award Ceremonies.  

Policy Review
Board of Trustees reviewed the following policies:
Policy 19: Wellness
Policy 20: Disposition of Surplus Real Property

Jordan’s Principle
A report on Jordan’s Principle which analyzes government policies and processes in regard to the discrepancies in funding for First Nations children who experience delays, denials, or disruptions of services available to other children was provided to the Board.  The Board was also apprised of local challenges and the reality delays in governmental services have for our communities.  As part of the Board Advocacy the Board will send an invitation to Blaine Calkins, MP requesting a meeting to dialog about Jordan’s Principle and the discrepancy funding for First Nations children.
