Board Meeting Highlights May 26, 2020

Alberta Risk Managed Insurance Consortium (ARMIC)
In an effort to reduce insurance costs to the division the Board made a decision to participate in the Alberta Risk Managed Insurance Consortium (ARMIC) effective November 1, 2020. The Board has terminated their participation in the Alberta School Board Insurance Exchange (ASBIE) effective November 1, 2020.

Capital Maintenance and Renewal Stimulus Funding (CRM)
On April 9, 2020, the Premier announced funding for the government's Capital Maintenance and Renewal CMR) initiative. The funding is 'intended to allow government and school jurisdictions to keep Albertans employed during these challenging times, while also providing much-needed upgrades to existing schools.'

The Board was asked to submit school maintenance and renewal projects that were prioritized based on a set criterion.  Approval was received for CRM funding of $2.5 million to complete the following projects.

  • WRPS has identified the following CRM projects:
  • Electrical Review (All Schools)
  • Roof Replacement - flat roof areas (Wetaskiwin Composite High School)
  • Roof Replacement (Alder Flats School & Buck Mountain)
  • Remediation and Furnace Upgrade - portables (Centennial School)
  • Administration Suite Upgrade (Parkdale School)
  • Mechanical Controls Upgrade (Queen Elizabeth School)
  • Change Room Renovation (Wetaskiwin Composite High School)

This is very good news for Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools as these projects would not have been completed at this time without the government offering this CMR initiative.

School Name Changes
Based on program funding changes it was required that three of our schools have their legal names changed.  The École Queen Elizabeth School will be Queen Elizabeth School, The CB McMurdo Center will be changed to CB McMurdo School, and the Early Education and Family Wellness Center will be renamed to the Lynn Lauren School.

Educational Relaunch September 2020
The first day of school for all students in WRPS is scheduled for Wednesday, September 2, 2020.  This start date for students will be contingent on the COVID-19 situation and a decision of the Government and the Chief Medical Officer of Health.
