Board Meeting Highlights March 10, 2020

Student Registration Process 2020-2021
Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools has been working on a standardized student registration process and timeline. All schools in the division will be following the same registration process.  Student attendance areas are established by the Board to optimize enrollment in each school.  Student enrollment impacts manageable class size, school staffing and resources.  A school is designated based on where the student’s residence is located.

Each school will be distributing the registration verification documents for current students by March 15, 2020.  Parents are asked to return the forms to the school by April 15, 2020 to ensure verification of registration for next year and to ensure the school has accurate contact and personal information.

Families will have an opportunity to request a school of choice but acceptance in a school of choice will be not be guaranteed and will be contingent on whether or not there is space in the program and resources are available. Students who live in a designated attendance area are ensured registration followed by other WRPS resident students with non-resident students having the third right of access.

School of choice and non-resident student applications can be submitted commencing March 15, 2020 however decisions about school of choice and non-resident applications will be made after April 15.  Families will be informed of the decision once it is made.

Kindergarten Open Houses
All of our schools offering kindergarten programs will be hosting an open house to accommodate registration for September 2020. Refer to the division and school websites for information about the upcoming  dates for the kindergarten open house at your school.

Alberta Risk Management Insurance Consortium
Effective November 1, 2019, school board property insurance premiums skyrocketed by $32 million provincially. Increases were anticipated but not to this magnitude. WRPS experienced increases to insurance premiums totaling 306%.  In response, WRPS is actively working with eight other school boards to create a new education insurance pool called the Alberta Risk Managed Insurance Consortium. The intention being that ARMIC, promoting a culture of risk management, will be able to negotiate lower insurance premiums allowing school boards to redirect monies back into the classroom.

Alberta Government Funding Model
Effective, September 1, 2020 Alberta Education is changing how school boards are funded. The Associate Superintendent, Business presented the new funding model and provided a high level overview of the potential impact to WRPS.
